Abstract

This paper explores the complexities of family dynamics within a conservative, upper-middle-class Indian household. Anita Desai rejects a narrow feminist approach and portrays females' desire for liberty from social and traditional norms in patriarchy. Novelist presents various characters in the novel that women or men; every person feels deprivation and profusion in their life. This paper deals with themes of deprivation, abundance and being trapped in society's claims. This novel reveals the dynamics of an Indian family entrenched in traditional values.
