Abstract

Intellectual disability, historically referred to as mental retardation, is characterized by significant limitations
in adaptive behavior that begin prior to the age of 18 and exist after the context of community environments
and measurement limitations are considered. The current study is aimed to study social adjustment of children
with intellectual disability. The objectives of the study were to assess the social maturity of IDC and to assess
the effect of intervention programmed on social maturity. The sample consisted of 300 IDC with mild and
moderate disability, attending special schools in Lucknow and Barabanki City, in the chronological age
between6-9 and 9-14 years. Results revealed that intervention program is effective in enhancing capabilities in
social sphere of children having intellectual disabilities.
