Abstract

Metallic mercury, also known as quicksilver, is a liquid metal with a bright silvery lustre. It exists in nature as the metal itself and as the sulphide (cinnabar or rassindoor). Metallic mercury is not poisonous if swallowed because it is not absorbed. It vaporizes at room temperature and causes poisoning if vaporized mercury is inhaled, swallowed, or rubbed into the skin. Mercury depresses cellular enzymatic mechanisms by combining with sulphydryl groups. Mercuric compounds being soluble are more poisonous than mercurous compounds which are less soluble. Mercury poisoning refers to toxicity from mercury consumption. Mercury is a type of toxic metal that we can come into contact with in a variety of ways. This may include consuming certain types of seafood and wearing certain types of jewellery.
